In testing alternative possible locations within Alastair's office, the relaxed pose in front of the bookcase, with directional lighting from a window to the left, provided a strong composition for the portrait painting. The bookshelf, in addition to being a strong horizontal within the composition, was important in the books and photos reflecting Alastair's political and personal life.
