Ed Balls has a wide range of interests outside politics. One of his serious interests is piano playing. Consequently, it was quickly decided to use his upright piano as a basis for the composition of the portrait painting. After testing seated and standing poses, it was mutually agreed to go with the relaxed standing pose.
