As with any double portrait painting commission, the key to a successful outcome is a good composition with a natural/relaxed "linkage" between the two figures. The open door in the background is something that helps recession by providing a lead out to something in the further distance. It is a feature found in several 17th century Dutch Golden Age paintings that I much admire.
